Field of Stars

“…First there is this matter of standing on your feet and not falling. How strange that such a narrow bit of foot can serve as a base. And then there is the strange matter of a suitcase, a box with a handle that you put things in for the road. What road and what things – that’s a question, but a separate one. Then there is the strange matter of night, and it’s dark, and you can’t see, and so you also don’t know. And this combination of feet, suitcase, night – very strange. It’s all so very strange, as though the things were once tied together but came apart”

SYNOPSIS

On the stage of existence, what drives us forward? Is it merely the act of placing one foot in front of the other, or is there a deeper force propelling us onward? In this journey of life, four performers bring to life a reflection on the eternal quest for happiness and ultimate purpose.

Each of these intrepid travelers represents a unique story, a singular path marked by chance encounters and unexpected challenges. They are parallel lines on the canvas of time, occasionally merging into a chaotic and revealing encounter. Throughout this odyssey, a suitcase accompanies the protagonists, laden with meaning: sometimes a burden, other times a coveted treasure.

But the inevitable moment arrives, the final destination looms before them in the form of death. The suitcase opens, revealing its secrets, its fears, and its longings. And now what? What remains when we leave behind this earthly world? In an act of celebration and resignation, the travelers bid farewell to life, aware that, in the end, we carry with us only the flesh and blood consumed by time.

This poignant theatrical piece finds its origin on the Camino de Santiago but also draws from the works of the renowned Israeli writer Hanoch Levin, particularly his work “Walkers in the Dark.” Divided into nine acts, each with its own depth and mystery, the play explores the darkest and brightest corners of the human soul. From the solitary traveler to the mother waiting with fading hope, each character sheds light on the eternal question: what is happiness and where can we find it?

In this dance between life and death, between hope and resignation, we discover that happiness is elusive, impossible to define or fully attain until we reach the final threshold. But even amidst uncertainty and darkness, we find a spark of hope, a small light guiding us on our journey into the unknown.
